The Future Already Happened Yesterday
Truth be told, some of the future is already here. So yeah, I am talking about ChatGPT, Midjourney, and so on.
Of course, we could ban and ignore it or curse about it all day. But is that helping? I think we should prepare for what is ahead but also for all that, which is already happening as individuals and as a society.
We need to talk about education and skill development, for example. Have you heard about the Dalton School, which started offering courses on prompt engineering? They embraced the change instead of banning ChatGPT like other schools in New York did.
Other topics we need to consider are ethical and responsible AI development. We do not want AI that is recreating unintended biases, discrimination, and negative societal impacts. We must encourage transparency, fairness, and accountability to help prevent this.
"AI is taking over my job" is another thing we need to discuss and prepare for. Of course, AI has the potential to automate specific tasks, leading to job displacement. Therefore, we need to identify areas where human skills can be enhanced and provide retraining opportunities. Governments, businesses, and educational institutions should collaborate to develop comprehensive strategies for reskilling and upskilling the workforce.
But there is more. We need to talk about regulatory frameworks and policies, privacy and data protection on the one hand, and continuous monitoring and evaluation on the other.
I know that's a lot. But ignoring all those topics won't bring us far. And hampering them won't do the trick either. So to ensure that we won't become guinea pigs for new technology, we must prepare. We need to discuss these things, find strategies and ways to minimize harm and keep humans and society at the centre of AI development.
